Root Shapes and Root Strength of Gears

During the gear design process, gear root shape is an important parameter. A higher root radius of gears will usually result in lower root stresses. During the manufacturing process, a higher root radius usually means a smaller tip radius of the tool (hobbing, shaping), which affects the wear of the tool and thus the overall manufacturing costs. It is also important to check, whather a final machining process like threaded wheel grinding, profile grinding or honing may negatively affect the gear root stresses due to the position and shape of the grinding notch. This and many other aspects related to it, can be further analyzed with 3D-FEM root stress calculation in KISSsoft. In this presentation, we will discuss different root shapes, the influcence of manufacturing on the effective root shape and the resulting root stresses based on ISO 6336: 2019 strength calculation method.

Gear Trainer Webinars cover a variety of topics on bevel and cylindrical gear manufacturing technology, including gear and transmission design and simulation, soft cutting and hard finishing processes, metrology, tools, workholding, software and 4.0 production systems. The webinars include a mix of different media including live demonstrations of processes and software applications. Gear Trainer Webinars are moderated live by gear technology experts including the possibility to ask questions via the integrated chat. Within 30 minutes, our gear-cutting experts get to the bottom of the issues, and any questions raised are addressed in the following Q&A session.

Participant data of Gear Trainer Webinars is treated confidentially and will not be published. Participation in the Gear Trainer Webinars is free of charge.
